Remembering Shawn McDuff
It was just last month on New Years Eve that we lost a very special person, Shawn McDuff. He passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones. Having lived with a disability, Shawn was an integral part of the close-knit family here at ILCNSCA, acting as the Deputy Director. Shawn’s drive and determination for independent living was infectious and our organization surely would not be where it is today if not for his dedication. He began his work with us in 1990 and made it his mission to advocate for the rights of all, regardless of ability level.
Outside of working with our agency, Shawn McDuff was a true New Englander. His love for sports and our region’s teams was unparalleled, and his favorite teams were the Boston Bruins, the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Celtics, in that order. Besides sports, Shawn was a foodie and loved watching the Food Network, as well as reality TV. As for music, his favorite bands and artists included AC/DC, Goo Goo Dolls, and Justin Timberlake, among others.
For Shawn, independent living was very important, as he lived with a disability. Through ILCNSCA, Shawn learned to live independently and, through this, became an advocate for independent living. The most rewarding aspect for Shawn was when someone living with a disability is able to move out of a nursing home or other facility and live freely in the community.
