Annual Report 2010

Joan Inez Nielsen

On October 2, 2010 one of the key ILCNSCA Founders, Joan Inez Nielsen died.

She, along with Gil Adrien and others, were the advocates for those of us living with disabilities on the North Shore and Cape Ann prior to the ADA. They took the tenets of Independent Living and advocated for the ILCNS to be founded in 1987, with their support from the North Shore Self-Help Group, a social and advocacy non-profit for those living with mobility and other disabilities.

The ILCNSCA has set up a fund, the Joan I. Nielsen Fund, to provide support to youth living with disabilities to transition to employment and adulthood. Your contributions to this fund are appreciated.

In addition, the ILCNSCA has renamed one of its awards the Joan I. Nielsen Youth Leadership Award, and this award will be awarded at our Annual Legislative Breakfast.

To all of you who knew Joan, we send to her family and to you our sympathy,

and we say to Joan,

We will miss you and we will carry on your commitment to independent living and advocacy.
